Ela of Lacock and other Wiltshire Nuns

Saturday, 08 December, 2012, 2.30pm, by Dr Virginia Bainbridge.

Find out more about Ela, Countess of Salisbury who founded Lacock Abbey in 1229.

Lacock Abbey was founded as a nunnery in 1229 by Ela, Countess of Salisbury. She retired there in 1238 and remained as Abbess until her death in 1261. There were other nunneries in Wiltshire and Dr Virginia Bainbridge has made a special study of them. They were all nationalised in the 1530s and closed down.
